Dental implants are the gold standard for replacing missing teeth and we love providing them for our patients. Our dentist in South Yarra uses them successfully to replace one or multiple teeth, with beautiful results. Implants can support replacement teeth fixed in your mouth, or they can support removable dentures: to make the denture stable.
Implants can often be placed at the same appointment that your problematic natural tooth is removed. Alternatively, you can also have implants placed at a time in the future, long after your natural tooth has gone. Placing implants is a minor procedure, so is usually done on the dental chair using local anaesthetic. Typically for implant treatment, we merge a 3D scan of your jaw with digital prototyping of your final result. We then use a surgical template generated from the planning software to ensure our plan is reproduced accurately in your mouth. This approach helps us make certain we choose the optimal size and position of your implant and achieve the ideal functional and cosmetic outcome for your new teeth. We only use the highest quality implants and their authentic components. These are manufactured by the world’s leading implant companies. We do this to ensure you have the optimal predictable and durable result. We also do it so that in the unlikely event, you did have any problems in the future and you are interstate or overseas, it will be easy to find a dentist that has the equipment and components to help you.
Medical titanium is the established implant material offering a safe, reliable and time-tested tooth replacement solution. Medical titanium bonds to bone (called osseointegration), which is why it is also widely used in hip replacements and other joints. More recently, zirconia, a type of ceramic has also become available as a novel implant material.
Implant treatment is a two stage process. The first stage is implant placement. The second stage is placing either a dental crown, bridge or denture on top. Dr Rickman prefers to do both stages for his patients so he can ensure the Dental Implants in South Yarra are placed in the exact position he needs for the best result with your subsequent crown, bridge or denture. However, he is happy to help patients who are requesting just one stage. Sometimes, both stages can be performed on the same day in one visit. In other situations, the stages need to be up to six months apart. This decision is case specific and a consultation would be needed to know what is best for you.
Implant success rate in dental research is typically quoted as 90%. Since coming to The Dentists in 2012, Dr Rickman’s success rate has been 95%. Failures tend to occur in specific groups of people, most notably smokers, but also people with certain medical conditions. Please be open and talk to us about these so we can offer you bespoke solutions most likely to suit your situation.
