Many people are apprehensive when it comes to root canal therapy as it’s perceived as a painful procedure. However, the purpose of root canal therapy is to relieve pain caused by an infection of the tooth’s nerve and save a tooth that without treatment can cause irreparable bone and tissue damage and may need to be removed. A tooth can have as few as one or up to four root canals, sometimes more. Root canal therapy has a very high success rate of over 95% and with anaesthetic and specially developed instruments can be completed comfortably.
The Dentists will conduct a thorough examination, which will involve detailed radiographs, with treatment taking one – three appointments depending on the circumstances.
Sometimes when a tooth has undergone root canal therapy a significant part of the tooth’s structure may have been destroyed by decay. It may therefore be necessary to place a supportive metal post to provide extra strength. Placement of a crown over your treated tooth will restore strength, form and function.
Following your procedure you may experience some mild discomfort for several days. This can be controlled by over-the-counter pain relief medication. A follow-up exam may be necessary to monitor your progress.
An effective oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing will keep your teeth and gums healthy and help to avoid the need for any future root canal therapy.
